Louisville Employment

Louisville employment has recently been found in the areas of healthcare and medical sciences industries. The city’s metropolitan area is commonly referred to as Kentuckiana because of its location on Ohio River which borders Kentucky and Indiana and includes counties in Southern Indiana. It is the county seat of Jefferson County and has an estimated population of 713,877 people as of 2008.

Louisville is an important shipping port in the 19th century because of its strategic location thus making Louisville and the Portland Canal as well as the Louisville and Nashville Railroad important links in water and rail transportation back then. The city’s importance to the shipping industry is still evident even today with the presence of the Worldport global air-freight hub for UPS at Louisville International Airport ranking Louisville as the 7th largest inland port in the nation. Today the city is famous for the extensively watched first race of Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing known as the Kentucky Derby.

Corn Island was the place of the first European settlement in the area in 1778 led by Colonel George Rogers Clark. In 1780, the Virginia General Assembly approved charter of Louisville and the city was named after King Louis XVI of France. Early inhabitants lived in forts for safety from Indian attacks and in the 1780’s they started to move out. Before the Civil War, the city has one of the largest slave trades in the nation and Louisville growth is attributed to the slave trade. Louisville employment during this time was at the shipping industry and slaves worked in various shipping-related industries. Louisville was the center of transportation, planning, recruiting and supplies of the Union forces during the Civil War.

From then on many developments happened in the city and the present day Louisville is a core player in the advancements in cancer treatment as well as hand and heart surgery. The University of Louisville has attracted around 70 high caliber scientists and researchers to man the newly built $88 million rehabilitation center and a health sciences research and commercialization park. The earliest recorded artificial heart transplants were performed in the city. The city’s concentration on offering Louisville employment primarily involved in medical and health care services is apparent in the 2008 data of the most common jobs in the city among college degree holders. Topping the list are registered nurses followed by the following jobs: Medical and health services managers, computer systems analyst, chief executives, lawyers, child, family and school social workers, sales representatives, middle school teachers, computer software engineers, financial managers, airline pilots, co-pilots and flight engineers, accountants and auditors, secondary and elementary teachers. These jobs are being filled mostly by college degree holders and if you are one then you can consider applying for any of these jobs.

Among the major corporations that provide residents and immigrant jobseekers a decent and well-paid Louisville employment are the following: Humana - the nation’s biggest health insurance company (included in Fortune 100); Brown-Forman Corporation - included in Fortune 1000; Kindred Healthcare Incorporated - included in Fortune 500; PharMerica - included in Fortune 1000; Yum! Brands - owners of several famous food services such as Pizza Hut, KFC and Taco Bell as well as A & W Restaurants and Long John Silver’s (included in Fortune 500); Hillerich & Bradsby - manufacturer of Louisville Slugger baseball bats; Norton Healthcare; Republic Bank & Trust Company; Stock Yards Bank & Trust; Thorntons Inc., ZirMEd - a healthcare technology firm; Texas Roadhouse; Papa John’s Pizza; Hilliard Lyons - an investment firm; SHPS - a healthcare and human resources services company; Presbyterian church (U.S.A.), Ford Motor Co - an automotive manufacturer with 2 plants in the area; Publisher Printing - prints trade magazines; Horseshoe Southern Indiana - entertainment and gaming resort; AT&T - telecommunication company; American Commercial Lines Inc. - manufacturing and transportation services; JBS Swift and Co - pork product manufacturer and JP Morgan Chase & Co - banking firm.
